Blog #29: Herbal/Prescription Interaction Awareness Month

This week, we will talk about herbal and prescription interactions. July is the month of awareness for any interactions within the herbal or pharmaceutical world. This month is meant to educate the public on the possible dangers of mixing herbal remedies or supplements with medications that may be prescribed. Natural supplements and herbal remedies have been very popular. Some herbal remedies have survived for many years, and have been a part of some cultures for generations. However, medical professionals will warn those on medications to be careful. Just because the supplement has been called “natural” or “healthy”, does not mean it is safe to consume or use.

    • Licorice can elevate blood pressure. But for people on blood pressure medications, this is not a good thing. It is best for people with high blood pressure to stay away from licorice.

    • Some antibiotics can interfere with prescriptions like birth control.

    • Some foods like garlic and ginger can interfere with blood thinner medications, like warfarin.

    • Eating charcoal has become quite popular (why, I have no clue) but charcoal can actually absorb your medications!

    • St. John’s Wort has been linked to cause many issues with medications.

    • Echinacea is known to help with colds and flus, however is also known to have negative effects in people with chemotherapy medications.

    • Fish oil may be a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids, but it can also interact with birth control, blood thinners, and even hypertension medications.

The best action to take is to tell your doctor every single medication, pill, or supplement you take. That way, you can avoid interactions to the best of your ability. I am not a doctor, but as a dietitian, I urge people to eat whole foods first before turning to supplements and herbal remedies. If you eat a healthy and well-rounded diet, there is no need to supplement.
